my daughter purchased a house and we need to trim the gardenia when can i do this it is so big and needs some minor trimming

If you need to prune you better do it ASAP. From what I've read you should prune immediately after the bloom period. Most gardenias bloom in spring or early summer, but some bloom as late as August.
