I am looking for information on a painting by H Dudley Murphy stillife of gardenias?

The print is quite old and from my grandmother's house. The flowers are vivid and the background muted. The flowers look to be in a bronze pot, sitting on a cloth covered table.

I am looking for information on a painting by H Dudley Murphy stillife of gardenias?
I had a better search-result, when I used his full name: Hermann Dudley Murphy. It is interesting that you have a print. I am going to take a leap of faith, and speculate that it may suggest that the original is in the public domain. Perhaps a musum.

Short Bio: Hermann Dudley Murphy, American, b. Marlborough, MA, 1867, d. Lexington, MA, 1945.

Best find: One of the most well-regarded authorities on this era of American art/artists, is this gallery:

http://www.jamesgrahamandsons.com/?fuse=... They published a book of the Hermann Dudley Murphy Exhibition in 1982. They would be a good place to contact.

1. A good place to begin the search, is at Amazon books. This artist is a well regarded artist, and there may be some references to art books that include his work.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/102...

2. Artprice website, lists a number of his paintings, under their auction results. I am not a member, so I can't see the detail.

http://web.artprice.com/ps/artitems.aspx...

You might notice, the first entry is a still life of a gardenia. This is not your painting, as the composition is different than your painting. It is probably that this was one of a series, using this subject matter of a gardenia. His floral paintings, were/are exquisite.

3. The AskArt, does indeed, have information on this artist; as well as a number of image pages. I am not a subscriber. However, if you are subscribe as a student, you can have 24 hours of access for $11.95. Or sign up for a month for $20.00

I don't know if this is a reasonable cost, to see the details on their images. And of course, there is no guarantee that your print, will be included in their database.

4. The Vose Gallery, is a very reputable Boston gallery.

As this gallery specializes in the Boston School of painters, this may be a good lead, to make contact with someone who can give you additional information about your print.

5. Catalogues:

You may find your print, and related details, in the catalog of Hermann Dudley Murphey's work, that was produced after his death.

Reference: Catalogue created for the 1945 “Memorial Exhibition of Paintings by H. Dudley Murphy”, at the Guild of Boston Artists

Here is the website for that Guild:

http://www.guildofbostonartists.org/

It may be helpful, to contact them, and ask for help with your particular print.

5. World Wide Art Resources website, lists the galleries and museums that are reported to have his work.

http://wwar.com/masters/m/murphy-hermann...

It takes some patience to work through these few links to museums, and then to check on their holdings for this particular artist.

6. Google searches: using the search words that include,

paintings by Hermann Dudley Murphy. However, I didn't run across anything very helpful.

It is wonderful that you have this print of his work. He is truely a masterful painter, and I have very much enjoyed viewing his landscapes and still life, during this search.

Sorry I was not able to locate the exact image for you. In conclusion, I think your best bet would be to try to get a library (city or university library), to locate and obtain on loan - one of those books listed on the Amazon link. Specifically this one:

Hermann Dudley Murphy (1867-1945): "realism married to idealism most exquisitely" : [exhibition], February 24-April 17, 1982, Graham Gallery (Unknown Binding)

Best regards for your continued search.
