Why are some of the leaves on my young (2 ft) gardenia turning brown? It has not yet bloomed.?

Gardenias are a royal pain and require very careful attention at all times during their lifetime.

This is probably a soil problem. It's either getting too much fertilizer and getting "burned", or it's not getting enough of one or more nutrients that it needs. Or, it could be getting too much or too little water. Gardenias need to be kept moist, but they also need good drainage.

I would take a cutting of the damage to a local nursery or agricultural station (college or university) for a more acceptable diagnosis. It's hard to tell what this might be without actually seeing it up close.

A new question for my gardenia?

i have asked several questionsabout my gardenia and now i have another. my gardenia has 5 buds on it right now. but the problem now with my gardenia is lack of leaves. does anayone know any household items can help. i heard coffe grains help??? if my gardenia has a lot of bids on it that are about ot bloom and have barely any leaves on the stems does it mean its still healthy. the leaves are not green green. they are still green with yellowish mixed. i dont know what causes it. my gardenia bush is onyl 2 feet tall it has over around 50 leaves on it few stems though. it is not in a pot either and i dont want to transplant it either. i did it once because it was in complete shade and it did not bloom only once. so i put it in the morning sun and its doing better this year except i would like to have more leaves.

Since you asked under Women's Health, run, don't walk, your gardenia to your OB/GYN. This could be serious or fatal.

Why do the unopened blooms on my gardenia plant fall off? do you think birds are the culprits?

check for insects then spray if any are found! plus, u might be watering them too much..... try to just water em once week..deeply though! they like to be on the dry side of life! good luck

Why do the unopened blooms on my gardenia plant fall off? do you think birds are the culprits?
Not birds. Bud drop can be caused by erratic watering and temperatures during bud development. It is a common event on many different plants. Hot days followed by cold nights, heavy rain followed by drought and drying/waterlogging of roots, are some of the possibilities.
Reply:have you checked your plant for insects? some gardenia are prone to whiteflys.check the underside of the leaf for smaal white bugs.good luck

Daughter gave me gardenia plant..no flowers yet..any suggestions?

I do feed it and water it according to the instructions..called the company who is down south, we are in Wisconsin....have it outside when it is warm enough. It gets full sun.

Daughter gave me gardenia plant..no flowers yet..any suggestions?
Probably pruned at the wrong time at the nursery. Leave it be this year and enjoy it next year. Pruning time is tricky with this plant/shrub.

I prune mine immediatly after it blooms.

Watch your neighbors this years so you know when it should bloom in your area.

How do i make essential oil out of gardenia flowers?

You can't.

But, what you can do is make a scented oil out of them. I haven't tried it with gardenias, but I make scented oils out of other herbs/flowers/plant bits..

Take a clean mason jar (or peanut butter jar, or any other medium sized jar except for a pickle jar - I've never found a way to get rid of the pickle smell!) and fill it with your flowers. Take a carrier oil (I like jojoba, but any non or light scented carrier with a long shelf life will work) and moisten the flowers. Add more flowers. Add more oil. Keep doing that until the jar is full, or you've added as much oil as you think you'll use. Let it sit for a couple of weeks, strain the flowers out, and you'll have scented oil.

I wish I knew! I love gardenias!

Perhaps you could ask at your local aromatherapy store, or contact an aromatherapy group or expert in your area who can tell you how to create your own essential oils.

Like most oils, it takes *a lot* of the particular plant to produce only a small amount of oil. So I'm thinking that you would need a fair few gardenias. It might be one of those scenarios where it's simpler to just bite the bullet and buy some gardernia essential oil than to go to all the trouble.

Good luck! :-)

Why are the flower buds on my gardenia fall off before they bloom?

Contact your county extention office. They will help you.

I personally think it may be due to over watering.

Why are the flower buds on my gardenia fall off before they bloom?
Probably too much heat and not enough water. Most gardenias (except radicans) require some shade. Preferably afternoon shade when it is very hot out. Water the ground beneath the plant, so the roots get all the water
Reply:I am not sure what area you live in but maybe its a little dry for them .......

S
Reply:It is probably due to a rapid change in climate, specifically lighting.

Other than that, make sure the roots are getting enough oxygen, and everything should go fine.

Gardenia Plant and increasing humidity?

Why do I always read to add a tray of water with "pebbles" around the plant to increase the humidity for a Gardenia. What purpose do the pebbles play? Why not just a tray or bowls of water? Why the pebbles?

Gardenia Plant and increasing humidity?
The pebbles keep the bottom of the pot OUT of the water. Then the soil in the pot is not soggy. But the air around the pot gets the humidity.

Good Luck!!
