Is it possible to split a gardenia plant? am moving & would like to take it with me.?

As you can see, how you do it may also be realtive to where you are.

Cultivars of Gardenia jasminoides grown in Florida can be propagated by cuttings or grafting. Plant production for north Florida should be restricted to "own root" because plants grafted on Gardenia thunbergia rootstock are not hardy in outdoor planting areas at temperatures below 28°F. Gardenias produced for south Florida should be grafted, because plants grafted onto Gardenia thunbergia are superior to "own root" ones.

Cuttings can be taken any time during the year, but are most successful in June, July, and August. Gardenia thunbergia can be propagated from seeds or cuttings.

Tip or midsection cuttings with wood 6 to 8 weeks old should be cut 4 to 5 inches long with at least 2 or 3 sets of leaves. Cuttings can be taken at or between nodes as they root from the cut end. Leaf removal is unnecessary and undesirable because it results in a longer rooting period.

Rooting of cuttings is best under continuous or intermittent mist, or in a closed-case propagating device. Rooting media should be a 50:50 combination of clean, sharp builders' sand and peat moss; or a 50:50 combination of peat moss and perlite.

In south Florida, propagation should be by grafting scion from a desired cultivar to a seedling rootstock of Gardenia thunbergia. Rootstock seedlings, however, are difficult to obtain. If collecting seed yourself (seed pod, Plate 14 ), simply sow the seeds from the berry in flats or pots containing a 50:50 combination of peat moss and perlite or 50:50 combination of peat moss and sand. Seeds germinate slowly and erratically. Seedlings should be removed when they form their second true leaf. By waiting until they produce their second true leaf you may increase their survival rate by 20 percent.

Never been to a high school dance. I thought I was too cool for them. HA-HA! Ihave never worn a wrist corsage, just a regular one, with the pins %26amp; all. I had a partner at one time who bought me a corsage for most of my birthdays when we were together. I was kind of embarrassed to wear it out. I thought they were for old ladies--I'm 48. My gardenia houseplant gets lots of buds but they fall off before they open up. What could cause this?

Are they little white bugs that you can barely see? My mom has a gardenia plant that gets these little white mites on it and she gets a bowl with some stuff she got at the gardening store and dips the leave in it to kill the bugs. The bugs are most likely the culprit.

However, you may not be watering it enough or it may be getting too much sun. It's certainly one of these three things that is your problem.

My gardenia houseplant gets lots of buds but they fall off before they open up. What could cause this?
is it getting enough sun? enough water? does it have bugs? do you fertilize lightly? does it get to much sun? to much water? to much fert?

try looking at the big picture and resolving the problem through deduction.

What causes a gardenia leaves to turn yellow and ends up having very few leaves on the bush?

lack of nitrogen and to much acid in the soil, try a little lime around the base and feed with a high nitrogen fertilizer.

What causes a gardenia leaves to turn yellow and ends up having very few leaves on the bush?
lack of nitrogen is what causes the leaves to turn yellow, which would also stunt the production of new growth. Go to your garden store and by a nitrogen enriching soil treatment.

Reply:Lessen the water and give it some iron. And check the stems for scale. Littlte white bugs.

It´s 43 degrees outside. Is this too cold to put our gardenia plant outside?

no it will do fine. it is cold though, but as long as it doesnt get below freezing it is okay.it needs 60s for flowers, so once you start seeing warmer temperatures flowers which are very fragrant will be seen as well

It´s 43 degrees outside. Is this too cold to put our gardenia plant outside?
Gardenia requirements are very exact, and to insure your plants continued bloom, these needs must be met.

Full sun, with some shading in the summer (in the hottest areas)

An acid soil with a pH between 5 and 6

Keep the soil moist, but never soggy

Humidity, or daily misting

Heavy feeding

**Cool night temperatures**
Reply:No, it likes cooler temps. But just don't let it get below 32 % with out covering the plant with a towel,or blanket.

What do you know about gardenia's profile?

gardenia the plant:

night temperatures down to 43 will help them set buds

high light

east or south facing window (in the northern hemisphere)

acidic soil

feed with miracid 1/4 strength recommended dose at every watering.

keep moist but not soggy

susceptible to mealy bugs, scale and aphids

leaves are dark green and shiny when healthy

Flowers smell fragrant

buds take a couple of months to develop

can be grow outdoors as a shrub if protected from frost(zone 10)

is that what you were wanting to know?

What do you know about gardenia's profile?
Gardenias thrive in warm, humid weather like that in the south. However, they do like cooler night time temperatures in order to initiate bud formation. One thing to watch out for is mealybugs and aphids which should be washed off with a hose right away. This usually is an indication that the plant is stressed or the air is too dry. Keep the plant well watered - Gardenias will wilt at the first sign of a missed watering! Adding some coffee grounds or Miracid in the soil will keep the shrub happy since it thrives in acidic soil. Give it a bright sunny location if you have it in a pot, or plant it outdoors where it will receive sunlight for most of the day. It is not frost hardy, so if you are in zones 5,6,7,and 8, you'll have to bring the plant indoors to protect it from the winter cold.

Why are the leaves of my gardenia bush turning yellow?

Yellowing leaves usually means too much water. Check the soil around your plant, not just the top of it, but go in, under the first few inches and check how moist the soil is. Also, you might want to check with your local gardening center for specific plant food for gardenias, different plants take different feed compositions (nutrients) and apply as necessary.

Why are the leaves of my gardenia bush turning yellow?
the first answer was spot on, I was told to use epsom salts on mine, and it really did make a difference. I think the salts replace a nutrient or salt that they need and easily are depleted of.

If this doesn't work, however, I would consider moving the plant, as they don't like a lot of sun, and their leaves will also turn yellow if this is the case. They prefer just the morning sun, not the afternoon, or dappled shade.
Reply:It's what gardenias do. Sprinkle Epsom Salts around the drip line, water in with miraclegro.
Reply:not enoght acid in the soil. add some acid fertilizer, or a few coffe grinds

I have a gardenia that is very leggy. What should I do?

Prune each branch back to two to three leaf nodes (the part where the leaf comes out). Each leaf node will send out a new branch. Once it is pruned, put it in a bright sunny spot. Plants become leggy and stretched when they are not getting enough sun. If you can put it outside for the warm weather, even better. Breezes and wind encourage sturdier new growth.

get it panty hose

I found spiderweb looking stuff on my gardenia house plant.Does anyone know what this is?

Might be spiders.

It also very well might be spider mites. Look on the underside of the leaves with a magnifying glass. If you see some little tiny fellas moving around, you probably have mites. There's a few ways to get rid of them. Start with dousing the plant with soapy water. Do that a couple of times a week for a couple of weeks and that should put a crimp on their lifestyle.

Horticultural soap or oil also works well on mites.

I found spiderweb looking stuff on my gardenia house plant.Does anyone know what this is?
IT IS SPIDER MITES AND YOU CAN GET A SPRAY AT WALMART TO SPRAY DIRECTLY ON THE PLANT OR YOU CAN USE SOAPY WATER IT WILL WORK ASWELL
Reply:if it white and looks like flour, it is a bug. You can get sprays for that, or you can make your own by taking chewing tobacco, making a tea out of it, an dputting that into a hand pump sprayer and spraying them down. You an also put a little little bit of liquid dishwashing detergent into the tobacco tea.
Reply:Get a plant mister, mist the plant 2x a day, Most of them like it dry
Reply:Spider mites are common pests in the urban landscape and can inflict serious damage to trees, shrubs and flowers. Both evergreen and deciduous plants may be attacked. Spider mites are not insects but are more closely related to ticks and spiders. Their common name is derived from their ability to produce silk, which most species spin on host plants. Mites are tiny—about the size of the period at the end of this sentence. They can also be very prolific, which is why infestations often go unnoticed until plants exhibit significant damage.

General Characteristics

Spider mites (family: Tetranychidae) have a simple, oval-shaped body and no wings or antennae. All species pass through an egg stage, a six-legged larval stage, and two eight-legged nymphal stages (protonymph and deutonymph) before transforming into an eight-legged adult. Immature stages resemble the adults except in size. An adult female may live for several weeks and lay many dozens of eggs during her lifetime. Under optimum conditions, spider mites can complete their development from egg to adult in less than one week, so there may be many overlapping generations in a single season. Therefore, populations can increase rapidly and cause extensive plant damage in a very short time. Spider mites have needle-like mouthparts and feed by piercing the leaves of host plants and sucking out the fluids from individual plant cells. This causes the leaves to have a stippled or flecked appearance, with pale dots where the cellular contents have been removed. Prolonged, heavy infestations cause yellowing or bronzing of the foliage and premature leaf drop similar to drought stress. Severely-infested plants may be stunted or even killed. Most of the mites feed from the undersides of leaves, although the damage is most evident from the upper surface.

Most spider mites have a habit of covering leaves, shoots, and flowers with very fine silken webbing, produced from a pair of glands near the mouth. The silk strands aid in dispersal by allowing the mites to spin down from infested to non-infested leaves, and to be blown by wind currents. When abundant, the silk also may shield the mites from pesticide sprays.

Damaging Species In Kentucky

Several species of spider mites live on plants. Fortunately, a rather small number routinely damage landscape plants in Kentucky. Some, such as the twospotted spider mite, have very broad host preferences, wheras with others (e.g., European red mite, spruce spider mite, southern red mite) the number of susceptible landscape plants is more limited. The twospotted spider mite and European red mite thrive under hot, dry summer conditions, whereas the spruce spider mite and southern red mite prefer cooler temperatures in the spring and fall. Being familiar with the following four mite species will help you to determine which landscape plants are most susceptible, and the time of year they are most vulnerable to attack.

Twospotted Spider Mite (Tetranychus urticae)

This is the most common and destructive mite on deciduous ornamentals. It has an extremely wide host range and will feed on many varieties of trees, shrubs, flowers, weeds, fruits, greenhouse and field crops. Immatures and adults are yellowish to greenish with two dark spots on either side of the body. Eggs are spherical and translucent. Strands of webbing are spun by the mites on the undersides of infested leaves and between branches. Twospotted spider mites overwinter as adult females in the soil or under the bark of host plants. They become active during the spring and may feed and reproduce throughout the summer and into fall provided conditions remain favorable for plant growth. It is considered a “warm season” mite which thrives under hot, dry summer conditions. Damaging populations seldom during wet, cool weather. The mites are especially destructive to winged euonymous (burning bush) in landscapes.

European Red Mite (Panonychus ulmi)

Another “warm season” species, this mite attacks deciduous trees and shrubs. It is especially common on flowering fruit trees such as apple/crabapple, cherry, pear, plum, hawthorn, and serviceberry. European red mites overwinter as bright red eggs laid in clusters on branches, limbs and trunk, often in such great number that the bark seems to be covered with red brick dust. Eggs of subsequent generations are laid on the foliage, usually on the lower leaf surface. Following spring egg hatch, there may be several generations per year. Development from egg to adult varies from about 3 weeks at 55 degrees F to less than 1 week at 77 degrees F. All life stages (eggs, immatures, and adults) are brick red. The presence of the overwintering eggs on the bark makes the use of dormant oils an effective control measure (see “Controlling Infestations” section below).

Spruce Spider Mite (Oligonychus ununguis)

Despite its common name, this mite feeds on more than 40 species of conifers. Most often attacked are spruce (especially Alberta spruce), pine, juniper, fir, arborvitae, hemlock, taxus and false cypress. The mites have a similar appearance to those already discussed. Coloration varies from green to deep olive to brownish red. Close inspection of the needles will reveal tiny white flecks and speckles where the mites have fed. Prolonged feeding causes yellowing, browning, and premature needle drop, often originating from the canopy interior. Infested foliage may also display webbing, eggs and cast skins. Heavy attacks can cause branch dieback or death of the plant.

The spruce spider mite is known as a “cool season” mite and is most active in early spring and late fall. It overwinters in the egg stage attached to the base of needles or on the bark. The eggs hatch in early spring, and mature in 2 to 4 weeks. Damaging populations may be reached in April and May, before warm summer temperatures slow their activity. Spruce spider mite populations rebound in the fall with the return of cooler weather, and feeding may continue into December or beyond, if winter temperatures remain mild. Damage inflicted by mite infestations present during the fall or subsequent spring often go unnoticed until the heat and dryness of June and July.

Southern Red Mite (Oligonychus ilicis)

This is the most common and destructive spider mite on broad-leaved evergreens, especially Japanese and American hollies, azaleas, viburnum, roses and rhododendron. Feeding on the undersides of leaves causes stippling, browning, occasional distortion, and premature leaf drop. Southern red mites overwinter in the egg stage on the undersides of leaves. Like the spruce spider mite, its numbers are greatest during cooler periods of the spring and fall.

Diagnosing Infestations

Timely inspection of susceptible landscape plants — especially during periods favoring mite outbreaks — is key to preventing serious damage. When scouting for spider mites, pay particular attention to plants having a history of mite problems. Spider mites often re-infest the same plants year after year.

Inspect stippled and distorted leaves to determine if mites are present. Similar symptoms can be caused by pests other than mites, including thrips, leafhoppers and lace bugs. Many spider mites prefer to feed on the lower leaf surface, so examine the undersides of leaves first. A 10 - 20 power hand lens or microscope is essential for clearly seeing the mites. The tiny mites will appear yellow, green, orange, purple, black or nearly transparent. Also visible on the leaf surface may be pale-colored cast “skins” shed by developing mites, and the spherical, often translucent eggs.

An efficient way to sample vegetation for mites is to hold a sheet of white paper or foam board under a branch and tap the foliage sharply. If mites are present, they will be dislodged and appear as slow- moving, dark specks on the paper.

Controlling Infestations

Spider mites are one of the more difficult groups of landscape pests to control. Infestations are easiest to control when detected early, before the mite populations have reached very high levels. Twospotted spider mite infestations can often be traced to the purchase of infested plant material, especially bedding and houseplants. When buying new plants, it pays to inspect the lower leaf surfaces for evidence of mites. Spraying plants with a strong stream of water from a garden hose or faucet can dislodge many mites from leaf surfaces. The approach is generally more effective on smaller plants (e.g., houseplants), with non-dense foliage and low mite populations. Water sprays should be directed upward against the lower leaf surfaces, and the technique will need to be repeated on regular intervals. Low populations of spider mites may be held in check by naturally occurring predatory mites which feed on both eggs and active stages.

Pesticides

Elimination of moderate to heavy infestations of spider mites usually requires the use of specific pesticides known as miticides. Some, but not all, insecticides will also control mites. Several mite-control products are listed in the table below. Some kill only active mites while others also kill eggs. Always read and follow the directions accompanying the product you are using. Some miticides may harm or discolor certain types of landscape plants.

Good spray coverage is essential when applying miticides. Thoroughly wet the foliage and try to contact as many mites as possible, paying particular attention to leaf undersides where most mites are living. In most cases, two or more applications at 5-10 day intervals will be needed for satisfactory control. Spider mite eggs that have not yet hatched are unaffected by most miticides; the same may be true of larvae and nymphs that are molting. During molting, spider mites remain inactive beneath the former skin, which serves as a barrier against insecticides. The quiescent mites also do not feed, rendering products that kill by ingestion temporarily ineffective. Consequently, if only one application is made, some of the mites may survive and the infestation will persist.

Not all products mentioned in the table are available to homeowners. Effective homeowner options include Kelthane, horticultural oils, and insecticidal/miticidal soaps. Horticultural oils and soaps can be effective alternatives to conventional miticides, but require thorough coverage so that all mite stages are contacted.

Horticultural oils can be used on landscape plants during the warmer months of the year when green foliage is present and the plants (and mites) are actively growing. Horticultural oils are applied at rates of 1.0 to 2.0 %. Dormant oils are applied in winter or early spring prior to bud break, or in the fall after the leaves have dropped and there have been several light frosts. They are useful for killing overwintering mite eggs and, therefore, can help to suppress infestations of spruce spider mites, European red mites and southern red mites which overwinter as eggs on infested plants. A dormant oil spray will not guarantee mite-free plants the following year, but will delay mite buildup the following spring. Dormant oils are either specially-formulated petroleum-based products or horticultural oils applied at higher rates (3.0 to 4.0%). When using any type of oil, be aware that these sprays will discolor many conifers that have a bluish, waxy coating on their needles. Maples, hickories, black walnut, smoketree and azaleas also tend to be oil sensitive. (Refer to the product label for a complete list of plants which may be sensitive to these products.)
Reply:Unfortunately, this is usually the tell tale sign that your plant has been infested by spider mites and if left alone those little bastards will multiply further and eventually kill your plant.

You can treat this problem by buying some insecticidal soap and spray your plant per the directions, especially on the underside of leaves. It also helps if you place a fan next to your plant, with the wind blowing as hard as possible. This disturbs the mites and disallows them from just having their way.

All you can really do is try to control the mite population by follow up treatment every week or so as it is almost impossible to totally eliminate the problem once it starts. That's because the eggs hatch continually and the spray is not effective against the eggs.

And be aware that sometimes the spray will also kill your plant if used incorrectly or overused.
Reply:You probably have spider mites. They very tiny, almost invisible. You can use a light spray of a chemical like RAID to get rid of them. It will draw your plant back a bit but it should recover afterwards. Also look for eggs on the plant, especially under the leaves. Some people have suggested a mixture of dish liquid and water to spray on them but I'm not sure of the concentration level. I just always use raid. BUT not too heavy or your plant will not bounce back. Best wishes.

What makes gardenia buds fall off before they open?

The two biggies are not enough water and heat. The other thing to check would be to make sure they're getting fertilized with the proper nutrients.

What makes gardenia buds fall off before they open?
high humidity at night can cause bud fall, also insects that deposit their eggs in the buds, the presence of fungus too, another is if the plants are overwatered or water logging is present, or the soil is too dry, the soil must be moist but not wet, also if the soil is not acidic, plus there are gardenia species that have bud fall characteristic.
Reply:Could be a cold snap you may have had or has it gotten hotter than normal? Also, they do not like windy locations.
Reply:There are so many variables here.................

1. Over watering

2. Under watering

3. Low humidity

4. Incorrect fertilizer ( use acid fertilizer)

5. Not enough sun

"Gardenia

Best known for their fragrant white flowers, gardenias are heat-loving evergreen shrubs that have become a gardening symbol in the Southeast. Another common name is cape jasmine.

About This Plant

Plant gardenias near a deck or window where you can enjoy the flowers' fragrance. The plants grow from 2 to 8 feet tall and wide, depending on the variety. Most gardenias grow into a round shape with dark green, glossy leaves and white, fragrant flowers that bloom from mid-spring into summer. Avoid planting gardenias near a concrete walk or foundation where the pH maybe too high for good growth.

Site Selection

Select a site with full sun to light shade and moist, rich, well-drained soil. Gardenias prefer acidic soil with a pH between 5.0 and 6.0.

Planting Instructions

Plant in spring or fall, spacing plants 3 to 6 feet apart. Have the soil tested to determine pH, and if necessary add the recommended amount of sulfur to reduce the pH to between 5 and 6. Dig a hole only as deep as the root ball and 2 to 3 times as wide. If your soil is in very poor condition, amend the soil you've removed from the hole with a small amount of compost. Otherwise don't amend it at all. Carefully remove the plant from the container and set it in the hole. Fill the hole half full with soil, then water it well to settle the soil and eliminate air pockets. Let the water drain, then fill the remainder of hole with soil and water thoroughly.

Care

Gardenias require at least an inch of rain (or equivalent watering) each week. Apply a 2- to 4-inch layer of organic mulch to help keep soil moist, reduce weeding, and maintain a constant soil temperature. Feed monthly during the growing season with an acidifying fertilizer. Prune in early spring to shape the bush, and deadhead after flowering to encourage more flowering. Check periodically for white flies and mealybugs, using a horticultural oil or insecticidal soap to control these pests. In regions where the plant is marginally hardy, protect bushes from hard freezes and drying winter winds."

Can a gardenia tree be grown in zone 4 of USA? john?

Yes... but only inside. Zone four is too cold for a gardenia (either tree, shrub or vine... yes, all three are available) plant to survive through the cold winter months. In fact... in the northern zones... a gardenia sometimes in the summer needs to be babied just to bloom. It's more of a tropical plant that likes Florida. But I share your enthusiasm for them... they smell wonderful!

Gardenia, hydrangeas, camellias do these take sun or shade?

Gardenia, hydrangeas, camellias do these take sun or shade?
Hydrangeas need lots of moisture but not soggy soil. The more moisture the more sun it can take but likes afternoon shade.Gardenia needs afternoon shade and protection from wind. Camellias take part sun. Protect from high winds.
Reply:Camellias and gardenias do well in partial sun, moist soil - hydrangeas do not tolerate direct sun very well but can handle dryer conditions. I live in zone 8 and it gets pretty hot and is often dry so I water frequently.

Gardenia - how to enhance growth indoors?

Suggestions only from experienced gardener please.

Gardenia - how to enhance growth indoors?
The key to Gardenia growth, and health, indoors: sunlight %26amp; warm temperatures.

Now before you stick that plant right against a window with full sun all day, remember that indoors it wants moderate warmth, and filtered light. If it gets direct sun, the plant needs to be several feet away from the window...at least.

Try to keep it from cool/cold drafts, and away from drying forced air heat vents.

Don't water too much, leaves will turn bright yellow and drop. Everything in moderation. Fertilize lightly. One trick, instead of fertilzer put some used coffee grounds on the soil. Not too much though.

You have chosen a very difficult and tempramental indoor plant.

Good luck.

I had a gardenia indoors, facing a east window,i kept it fertilized and watered, but id died out on me,why?

GARDENIA'S ARE NORMALLY AN OUTDOOR PLANT AND DON'T TAKE ALOT OF FERTILIZER. YOU MAY HAVE WATERED IT TOO MUCH AND THEY REQUIRE FULL SUN. THEY ARE NOT A SUCCULENT PLANT. CONTAINER MAY HAVE BEEN TOO SMALL OR TO BIG FOR PLANT.

I had a gardenia indoors, facing a east window,i kept it fertilized and watered, but id died out on me,why?
My step~Mom had this same problem.

I dont think Gardenia like all that much sunlight ~if any.

If there's still even the slightest bit of green, try add'g some B~1 Vitamin to it %26amp; move it to a North Facing Window.

Windows (facing East or West) tend to Absorb the Heat %26amp; then radiate it off inside. Im guess'g that might b what happened.

Even in places back East, these windows will do the same thing as here in Arizona. U have to remember Glass is glass %26amp; it will reflect sunlight (%26amp; heat) inward during different times of the day. Add that to the Heat the window radiates off %26amp; U have a Heat Cooker for a Plant. ~not good unless U live someplace that plants or cactus like it.

As for Full Sun, my step~Mom's had full sun til about 2 pm or so %26amp; it still died. She had it about 4mos (Mid to Late August to November). Our temps had even come down %26amp; it started look'g sick %26amp; she tried everything %26amp; it still died.
Reply:Gardenia is not just a flower it is actually a bush and it can get very big. Its hardy outside with little care!

Why isn't my Gardenia flowering ?

I live in a very hot climate and I have a large potted Gardenia sitting outside on my balcony. It gets lots of sun and seems to withstand the 40C temps so long as I water it regularly. It has lots of new shoots and green leaves, however it has stopped blooming. Any suggestions as to how to get it to bloom?

Why isn't my Gardenia flowering ?
Gardenia requirements are very exact, and to insure your plants continued bloom, these needs must be met.

Full sun, with some shading in the summer (in the hottest areas)

An acid soil with a pH between 5 and 6

Keep the soil moist, but never soggy

Humidity, or daily misting

Heavy feeding

**Cool night temperatures*
Reply:They are very temperamental plants. Did they ever have buds? Give your plant a feeding of epsom salt . If the buds don't look too great if You have them, pinch them off, so it re-energizes the plant. good luck!

Ants always hang out on my gardenia tops, they dont seem to harm it thou? anyone else ever see this?

Ants are often associated with aphid populations, especially on trees and shrubs, and often are a tip-off that an aphid infestation is present. The ants are there eating the "honeydew" or waste excrement that the aphids release. They have a "symbiotic" relationship. The ants guard and protect the aphids from predators, while the aphids unknowingly feed the ants with this honeydew. Check the leaf surface and see if there is any sticky residue on them. Turn over the leaves and see if you can spot any aphids. After a while, the honeydew will become covered with a black moldy looking soot, which is appropriately called "sooty mold". Check for this also. You may wish to spray with some "Safers" insecticidal soap, or give the bush a good hard shower with the hose to knock the aphids off. In order for you to get rid of the ant population, you are going to have to first remove the aphids. Hope this answers your question.

You might check for scale insects too. Scales are common on Gardenias, they produce honeydew which ants like. You may see "sooty mold" on the lower leaves when scales are present. Ants are almost always a sign of insect activity.
Reply:Some flowers, like peonies, need ants to survive. The ants eat the gooey stuff between the unopened petals and allow them to open. I don't know if gardenias are the same, though.

I have a gardenia which I had to repot due to weavels, the leaves are turning yellow & falling off please help

Gardenias don't like being repotted. The plant will probably recover if kept in a draft free sunny place with a nitrogen rich fertilizer added for the blooms. As much as I love Gardenias, they really are very finicky. I wish you luck with it.

My dwarf gardenia looks burnt up. Is there anything I can do to save it.?

First, make sure you don't have it planted in an area that is getting too much sun. If it is supposed to have full sun %26amp; you live in a hot climate it may only need the morning sun. Also, don't water it during the day when the sun is blazing down. Plants can get sunburns too. It's best to water first thing in the morning and as the sun is starting to go down. You don't want to water too much as it is getting dark though as this is when mold could start growing. Hope this helped.

My dwarf gardenia looks burnt up. Is there anything I can do to save it.?
Gardenias love full sun. It obviously isn't getting enough water. I would check the soil quality. Make sure its dark, and retains moisture. How long has the plant been in the ground?

How hot does it get? If it is recently planted, I would replant it using a combo of Miracle Grow Garden Soil mixed with Soil Conditioner, 50/50, to help it retain moisture, and cover with 2 inches of mulch.
Reply:Trim any bad leaves or dead bits of. Water and make sure it's not in a windy place.

Is it possible to train a gardenia plant into a gardenia tree and how do i it?

Hey Katie Bug,

Gardenia plants are very sensitive plants. If you have one growing nicely, then just prune a little at a time. First remove the bottome lower branches that will give it more of a Trunk. Only a couple at a time. Let it go for 3 months, then if there are more lower branches to remove, take a couple more.

When you cut a branch off - cut near the Collar but don't damage the Collar. The plant will seal off the cut eventually, by growing over the cut. This is known as compartmentalizing. The wound will always be there but it will not allow rot, mold, disease, etc. in after the plant seals the wound.

Below I have posted my Blog - where I pruned a Wax Myrtle as you are attempting to. There are web sites posted on the blog, and pictures of Before and After. The Wax Myrtle is not as sensitive a plant, so I was able to remove 75% of the branches that will be removed in one pruning event. You should only remove 10% at the most in any one event, because of the Gardenia sensitivity. Revisit your Gardenia each 3 months, and in 18 months, you will have a 'tree' look. However small or large. Then the rest is maintenance pruning.

Be sure to get your gardenia on a proper fertilizer and soil pH. That will ensure it's health, and abiltiy to seal the wounds you will make.

What is the best and most effective fertilizer for a gardenia house plant (tree)?

Sprinkle used coffee or tea grounds over the dirt, and water as usual. The water will leach the acid from the grounds into the soil and feed the plant.

What is the best and most effective fertilizer for a gardenia house plant (tree)?
Gardenias need a special acid fertilizer, if I remember correctly. Look for it at Walmart. There is one specially for Azaleas and acid loving plants.

Gardenia hasnt flowered, leaves going brown and brittle?

The plant must have a rich, acid soil (pH of 4.5 - 5.5). The soil should be porous which allows water to drain through quickly and yet has the ability to retain moisture. Prepackaged acid based potting mixes that are prepared especially for gardenias, camellias and azaleas can be purchased at many garden centers. It sounds as though your Gardenia may be lacking water or nutrients (if it's in a shady area then frozen water in the soil becomes unavailable to plants sometimes even though it appears moist). Give it a good feed for acid loving plants - miracle grow ericaceous food is good; keep it well watered; and if possible give it a good mulch of ericaceous compost or dig out and replace some of the surrounding soil with it. Good luck :-)

Just finished pruning two of mine yesterday. you will be surprised at how seldom you will need to prune it.

Trim lightly by hand to shape after each bloom cycle if / when needed. this was only my second trimming this summer.

Prune during the Fall time, just before leaves start coming alive

Why are the leaves on my gardenia plant turning yellow?

Gardenias often have yellowing of older leaves in late winter and spring. This is usually a sign that the plant is moving its magnesium to the new growth. In the beginning of spring feed with Epsom Salts (Magnesium sulphate) will usually solve this problem. To avoid getting other nutrients out of balance, only apply Epsom Salts no more than once a year.

Gardenia plants that are healthy will grow vigorously and are less likely to be affected by fungus problems. Planted in an ideal position, kept mulch and well fertilised regularly, will help most gardenias to stay robust. Always keep a close examination of the plants and deal with problems as soon as they materialize.

Why are the leaves on my gardenia plant turning yellow?
Not enough water. When you water do it so water runs out the bottom. the plant always beed to be kept moist and is usually unforgiving if left dry. If it's outside, put it in the shade. And finally, use a Acid fertilizer when you water once a month. Miracle Grow carries one called "MirAcid."
Reply:I have found that using old coffee grounds under the plant works real well, I also use them on azelas. Good luck.
Reply:if turning yellow along the ribs, try using a fertilizer with chelated iron. i had the same problem and this took care of it in no time

What is your favorite flower, I love Poppy's and Gardenia's...do you?

Oh yes, I most certainly love Gardenia's and Poppy's. And roses, orchids, jasmine, honeysuckle, freesia, carnations, and bluebonnets, our state flower. I think I am pretty much a flower freak! I love it when our roses, jasmine and sweet

honeysuckle are all blooming at one time. It is so fragrant when that happens, I just want to stay outside all day, as long as it isn't too hot outside. I also love the smell of my lemon tree when it blossoms and then when the blooms turn into big lemons and also when my magnolia tree blooms. :-)

What month do Gardenia Radica's bloom?

I bought it at the end of Sept. with blooms on it. I would have thought it would have flowered by now. I know it is a slow grower but I want flowers. Please help

What month do Gardenia Radica's bloom?
Gardenia Radicans grows 6-12 in. high and spreads to 2-3 ft. Summer flowers 1 in wide, but with gardenia form and fragrance. Good small-scale ground cover, container plant. Gardenias fail to grow and bloom well without summer heat. Fertilize during growing season with acid plant food. It looks like you bought the plant at the end of its blooming season, till next summer enjoy the evergreen foliage.
Reply:Long flowering season from late Spring.

I planted two gardenia plants planted them in 18in clay pots the blooms will not blossom. What do I do?

If all is well with the plant except that it is not blooming you probably need to give it more sun. Do you have a sunnier window you can move it to?

Also an old trick is to place the plant in a clear plastic bag with an apple. As the apple ripens it gives off methane tricking many plants into blooming.

Just put some air into a clear plastic bag or prop it up like a tent over the plant and apple. Take it down in 3 to 4 days.

How to make an ironing spray with the scent of gardenia/rosal flower?

Sometimes I mix my liquid fabric softener with some water and spray my clothes while I`m ironing. This will not give the starch look but it will get the wrinkles out.

If you are wanting to starch them I would mix some cornstarch, fabric softener and water together and make homemade starch. Before putting the iron on the spray, rub what you have sprayed on your clothes in real good with your hand or you will have alot of starch build up in one spot. I would not use this mixture on anything white.....Good Luck and have fun!

Use water and what scent of oil you want and why, that's they make perfume so a person can smell good who will be smelling of your clothes after you iron them.

I have just never seen a flower this big (almost the size of a paper plate!). Does anyone know of any flowers that might look similar and have color?

Flower similar to a Gardenia?
I agree with the other answerer, I think you're looking at Peony(Paeonia). Most are herbaceous perennials, although there are some woody/ shrubby ones (Paeonia suffructosa). Peony is available in a wide range of colors, some flowers are fragrant. All do best in full sun with the soil being kept moist.

Your local independent garden center should have a selection of plants available this time of year. I would suggest picking one in a two or three gallon pot. If you start too small, it'll be years before you see some 'serious' flowering.

Good luck-
Reply:Sounds like a peony to me--they smell wonderful and come in different colors.
Reply:The picture you have is of a Peony. The variety is named "Gardenia", because of it's color and it's wonderful scent.

-peonies are long-lived (over 50 years).

-peonies are hardy (to USDA zone 2).

-peonies are drought tolerant.

-peonies are low maintenance.

-peonies are deer-resistant.

-with thoughful selection of cultivars, the peony bloom season can last 6-8 weeks

-many new varieties have strong stems.

-peonies have been cultivated for more than 2000 years as medicinal and ornamental plants.

-flowers come in a range of colours, including yellow, coral, peach and lavender, in addition to white, blush, pink, magenta, and red.

Peony blooms may be single, semi-double, double, anemone, Tree variety, or Japanese in form, and their scent can be classified as rose, lemon, honey, or musk.

I have yellow leaves on my gardenia bushes, and green too. I've already used iron?

Healthy gardenia bushes get yellow leaves on them all the time. (odd ones not all the leaves). they are evergreen and when the leaves get old and need to be replaced they go yellow and drop off. Most deficiencies show up as green veins or edges and yellow on th leaf at the same time.

If the yellow is just on the odd leave, ignore nothing wrong, just nature taking its course.

I have yellow leaves on my gardenia bushes, and green too. I've already used iron?
Either too much water or too little. Are the leaves soft and yellow? if so, water less. If they are dry and brittle and yellow water more.
Reply:There are so many reasons a gardenia will have yellow leaves. We always hear too much or too little water. Try putting it in a less sunny location for awhile. If it's in a pot, water once a week and use a 20-20-20 fertilizer, one tablespoon per gallon of water. After about one month, plant in a partial sun in the ground. Make sure you water fully the first time, then follow up with a good plant food every couple of weeks. Allow soil to dry between waterings.
Reply:Sounds like a mineral deficiency. Try adding some calcium (a little cornmeal) and some epsom salts (Magnesium Sulfate).

Gardenias need a bit of both.

Do gardenia bushes have large roots?
MASTER GARDENER to the RESCUE. Actually it's the other way around. Will your drains interfere with your gardenia roots? I am assuming you are planting the popular, normal sized plants like G. augusta and not G. thunbergia which in my garden has topped 12 feet?

The gardenia I assume you want to plant does not have a big nasty root system. In fact try to keep it from being crowding from other plants. I know you didn't ask for planting advise, but us MASTER GARDENERS always try to give you your nickles worth, so I'm going to tell you any how.

you want to provide fast-draining but moisture-retentive soil conditioned with lots of organic matter such as peat moss or ground bark. (don't forget to moisten the peat moss before mixing into the soil). Always plant gardenias high, like azaleas to avoid crowding from other plants and competing roots. That doesn't mean ontop of a 2 foot mound... but that really wouldn't hurt. Just so it is planted slightly higher then the other nearby plants.

Mulch to control weeds. Do not cultivate around them. If your water is high in salts, leach salt monthly to avoid leaf burn. Mist plants early in the morning except when in bloom.

Feed every 3 weeks during growing season with ACID plant food. Remove dead wood and faded flowers right away. Wash the plant frequently with jet spray of hose, but not if temp will top 90 deg.

They can be a real pain in the ... but when cared for they are a joy to be near. Enjoy.
Reply:They will not interfere with your drain pipes, I have two planted on top of were the sewer drains are in my yard, they have been there for around 8 years

How did Billie Holiday keep the white gardenia in her hair without it falling out?
You can put a bobby pin in between the branches or the flower or take a hair pin and go through the bottom of the flower to secure it.

Whatever you choose make sure you use at least 2-3 pins in different positions to secure it firmly.

It may take a little work, to get in in just the right position and make sure its secure, but take your time the first few times can be a little hard.

Gardenia care, how difficult is it?

Just purchased a potted Gardenia plant beaultiful! Never had to care for a Gardenia before. Any tips?

Gardenia care, how difficult is it?
Your challenge in growing the gardenia as a houseplant is to match the plant’s native environment as closely as possible. First, make sure you give the plant plenty of bright light, preferably direct sunshine for at least half a day. Winter will likely be the most difficult time to keep high light intensity due to shorter, gloomy days. Moving plants closer to southern-exposure windows and/or supplementing with plant-grow lights will help. Cooler room temperatures are best for the gardenia, around 55 F at night and about 10 degrees warmer by day.

Maintaining proper relative humidity is a challenge, particularly during the winter heating season. There are several ways to help increase humidity, including running a humidifier and grouping plants together on trays of wet pebbles. Misting by hand with a spray bottle offers only momentary relief and so does not really increase humidity in a meaningful way.

A healthy, blooming gardenia will need to be nurtured with a steady supply of water and nutrients, but don’t overdo. The goal is to provide the proper balance of water, air and nutrients. If soil is kept constantly wet, the roots will be starved for air. Too much fertilizer can lead to damaging salt accumulation. Monitor the soil frequently for moisture content, and water thoroughly as the top inch of soil dries. Use a fertilizer that is formulated for acid-loving, blooming plants, such as an azalea-type product, according to rates listed on the label.

Don’t be afraid to prune the gardenia; in fact, blooming will be more prolific on younger growth. Remember that the gardenia is a woody shrub in its native environment and so may need to have older, woody stems removed to encourage new branches.
Reply:I have had such a difficult time with gardenias. I can grow practically every thing else, but gardenias. Once again, I bought 3 gardenia plants and this time planted them in a slightly shaded area. They are doing great. Make sure you water them frequently (but not excessively) in their well drained soil as they will pout if you don't. Also, they are acid loving plants so fertilize so use a ferilizer especially for azalea's or gardenias.

Best of luck. Mine is finally changing!

What would make my new healthy looking gardenia bush wilt after it was planted in my garden?

Transplant shock is most likely the problem - basically your bush is in shock. This stress can be caused by different things taking place including not watering it in well and keeping it well watered (but not wet!). Newly planted shrubs, trees, plants, etc., require more water after they have been transplanted (make sure the area is well drained so as to not deprive them of oxygen and drown their roots and them). Transplant shock can manifest itself in wilt, yellowing and/or dropping of leaves, and even stunting of new growth. Transplant shock can last for quite a long time in some plants, again depending on the severity. Do not fertilize right now! This will only worsen the situation by making the plant grow more during a time of stress. Just be patient and give the plant time to adjust.

What would make my new healthy looking gardenia bush wilt after it was planted in my garden?
Hi

Thers a couple of reasons that this could happen when you dug the hole for it to be transplanted into did you 1. put some compost in to it and 2. give the ground a good watering and once you had coverd the roots with the soil give it a further watering using a plant tonic/food like mirical grow that can help the plant from shock of being up rooted and transplated. also if you took it out of a pot to transplant it in your garden it may have been better to soak the roots for a hour or so befor placing into the ground.
Reply:It depends on where you live. If you put it in full sun in zone 8 or 9, then that might be your problem. They need morning sun, afternoon shade if you are in a hot area.
Reply:Did you water it with Vita start(vitamin B1 plant starter)? Most plants get a little shocked when first planted. The Vit B helps the plants make this transition. Hope this helps

Where are the seeds on a gardenia flower?
If your variety is thunbergia, it's hard work getting the seed! You have to smash the fruits open and scoop it out by hand. Use a hammer or other blunt instrument to get the fruit open, and then use a nail or heavy spoon to scrape out the seed. Pretty unforgiving work!

If you have gardenia "jasminoides" or the common gardenia, your work will be a little easier at getting the seeds from the fruit (which follows behind the bloom), but from seed it can take 2 to 3 years for a new plant to bloom, whereas if you do air layering or take a cutting, you'll have a blooming plant in a year. I have a huge gardenia bush when can i trim it so it looks better?
If you need to prune you better do it ASAP. From what I've read you should prune immediately after the bloom period. Most gardenias bloom in spring or early summer, but some bloom as late as August. You don't want to cause new growth to form just as the weather gets cold. Below are 3 links with info on pruning that should be helpful.

Is it possible, & how would I root, & transplant a gardenia?

Taken from a web site on the subject:

"Greenwood and semi-ripe cuttings root well at anytime of the year (March being the best time ). Both types of cuttings are taken from the current years growth. Basically, this means choosing shoots that have not become to woody (hard), nor those that are still soft and sappy. Use only healthy, disease free shoots. "

How do you tend to a potted gardenia inside your home? I've got it sitting by a window. Will it bloom there?

It should if you water and fertilize it properly.

Gardenia blooms white but then turns yellow?

I live in Las Vegas and have a potted Gardenia sitting on my patio porch. It gets partial sunlight but mostly shade. A few leaves turn yellow but what bothers me is that after the blooms come out white, they too turn yellow. Not all but many do. Any suggestions?

Gardenia blooms white but then turns yellow?
Take heart my friend. Gardenias are an extremely finicky plant. I hve had several and two I replanted (within 5 minutes mind you) keeled over and died within a week no matter wwhat I did. There are many reading your post that wish they could just keep them alive. But almost always after they bloom those beautiful fragrant white blooms they turn yellow %26amp; die. But you'll get more. Also look for aphids. I used to make a spray with 12 oz water %26amp; 4-5 harbanaro peppers crushed up let it sit for a few days shake and spray lightly.
Reply:Use cornmeal in the soil. That will stop the yellowing. I am not sure why or how it works but I know it does. Make sure its pure cornmeal. Not cornstarch. Good luck :) Report It

Reply:Gardenia is a genus of about 250 species of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae, native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, southern Asia, Australasia and Oceania.

The genus was named by Carolus Linnaeus after Dr Alexander Garden (1730-1791), Scottish-born American naturalist.

They are evergreen shrubs and small trees growing to 1-15 m tall. The leaves are opposite or in whorls of three or four, 5-50 cm long and 3-25 cm broad, dark green and glossy with a leathery texture. The flowers are solitary or in small clusters, white or pale yellow, with a tubular-based corolla with 5-12 lobes ('petals') from 5-12 cm diameter. Flowering is from about mid-spring to mid-summer and many species are strongly scented.

I just bought a gardenia plant. The instuctions are in deutsch, so I´ve no idea how to make it grow and bloom

I know I should grow it in a container, but how much water do I give it, and what kind of sun/no sunlight?

Thank you!

They like high humidity and high light intensity, but keep it relatively cool (especially at night, it likes to be around 60 degrees). Mist them often with a spray bottle, and keep the soil acid (look for azalea or acid-loving plant food).

Don't be upset if it dies or starts dropping leaves...those things aren't easy to keep alive indoors, especially when they're young. If you keep them too wet, they'll get gnats (let it dry out a little to kill off the babies), and if they're too dry, watch out for spider mites--little webbing between where the leaves meet the stem. If this happens, give your plants a shower (literally, stick them in the shower for a few minutes)

As with most house plants, stick your finger in the soil about an inch. If it feels dry, water it thoroughly (make sure you dump out any water that drains out the bottom, though). If it still feels moist, give it another day or two.

Hope this helps, good luck!
Reply:Ask at the place where you bought it! or look it up on the web. I think gardenias are from a warm climate, so unless you live in the south, yours may not last the winter. But you can enjoy it now!
Reply:Call the shop you bought it from. They should be happy to help you!

More blooms on a Gardenia?

I was just wondering if someone could tell me what makes a gardenia bloom more often. Mine seems to just have one at a time as a rule, the minute one is brown and falls off, another one blooms. My boyfriend's mother has one just a little bit larger than mine and it is full of them. Does this depend on climate? Sun? or just depending on the plant?

More blooms on a Gardenia?
I have found that my gardenias do not bloom if they are in full sun. Once I moved them to partial shade, they started blooming like crazy!
Reply:Do you fertilizer yours? Your boyfriend's mother probably does

What can I do to help with yellow foliage on Gardenia bush? (In coastal North Carolina)?

They do that at this time of year. It's a gardenia thing.

Epsom salts sprinkled around the drip line, water in with miraclegro, poke rusty nails in the dirt.

good luck, neighbor (mb, sc)

Help with diseased Gardenia Bushes ?

I have two very big Gardenia bushes in my yard and they both have this black stuff all on the leaves. I'm not sure if its a disease or something else they bloom every may 27th like clock work but that black stuff has been on the leaves for years now and I cant get rid of it. What should I do cut both plants down to the ground and let them grow back and if I should do that then when would be the right time of the year to trim them down? thanks to everybody who will answer this.

Help with diseased Gardenia Bushes ?
We've had the same problem. The black on the leaves is a "sooty mold" usually caused by whiteflies. Every so often, plants need a "bath" of sorts. Use Johnson's Baby Shampoo mixed into a gallon or so of water and put it in a pump-up garden sprayer. Thoroughly wet the plants with this mixture, allow to sit for a few minutes, then rinse off with a mild stream from the hose. In addition, use a pesticide such as Malathion to control the whiteflies.
Reply:I have gotten black powder type stuff on all three of mine every year the past couple of years. I just left them alone and they were okay. Call a nursery and take a sample to them to check it out. Mine are still alive and have buds coming on. It has been cool here so they are a little late this year. But, as you know my black stuff could be different from yours hard to say. I know I was upset the first time I noticed the stuff and am glad they are still alive.

I re potted my gardenia and it looks to be dead can some one help?

i also added in m-grow in the dirt.

I re potted my gardenia and it looks to be dead can some one help?
You may have shocked it with the m-grow (if that is a fertilizer). My suggestion is to repot again without the mgrow. Shake all the loose soil off the roots to get rid of all the fertilizer and repot with fresh soil. Cut all stems back to green. Keep it out of direct sunlight and water generously.
Reply:A friend gave me a gardenia last year and I decided to repot it right away. My plant lost nearly all it's leaves to shock. Gardenias hate to be moved, however, it will come back. Check one of the branches by scraping it with your fingernail and see if it is still green. If it is then it is still alive. If you can't find any green then you might consider a new plant. I hope your gardenia makes it.

It has sprouts, now what will help my gardenia bloom?

Temperature. Gardenia needs to experience cool temps in order to bloom. As soon as temps reach 65 degrees by day then move it outside in an area with filtered light, but remember to bring it inside if temps drop below 50 at night. Gardenias tend to bloom when temps are between 65-75 degrees. This is also a good time to begin fertilizing them. It also helps to leave them outside through the summer and into the chiller days of Autumn before bringing them inside.

Good Luck

Epsom salts and Bloom booster will help. What Spt said, she's brilliant.

I have a beautiful Gardenia plant outside in full bloom and I would like to........?

cut some and replant. I definitely do NOT have a green thumb and want to know: Can I cut some of the Gardenia plant off and replant?????? Also, how long will the plant bloom for?????

I have a beautiful Gardenia plant outside in full bloom and I would like to........?
I have never tried this with a Gardenia however I have rooted Hibiscus cuttings. You can do a search on the internet and see what it says about Gardenia cuttings. If you try it, go to Wal-Mart, Lowes, Home Depot, a nursery, etc. and get a hormone rooting powder. When you cut your piece off, you will dip the end into the powder and it REALLY makes a huge difference in rooting your cuttings. You can also just cut some pieces and stick them in water and see if they will grow roots for you. This did NOT work with my hibiscus but it may work for you. When you get decent roots growing off of the plant, you can put it in the ground.

I added a couple websites with more info on them. Hope this helps and Happy planting!
Reply:What do you mean by "cut some and replant"? If you mean cut some to make a flower arrangement, go for it. You can cut up to 1/3 of the plant, all the way down to the base, and it will come back even stronger next year, due to the new growth that will come in when you open it up and let in more light. Just try to take out the branches evenly, a branch here and there so that your plant will still look good until it grows back. Do this for 3 years, and you will have reduced the size and rejuvenated the shrub.

Prune soon after the blooms end because gardenias set their blooms for next year not long after this year's blooms are finished.

If you are talking about relocating the plant, that is a different subject and we will need more info.

I used to have a "brown thumb" but you would be amazed to see my garden now. Plant lots of things, experiment, water, prune %26amp; fertilize. Sunlight will do the rest!

Replant means you want to uproot the gardenia and move it. You have said that twice but I sense you're really asking if you can root the pieces that you cut from the plant.

Softwood cuttings can be started around February at the beginning of the growing season. The plant is "concentrating" on the blossoms now.

My gardenia bushes are dry, brown, and brittle as of 5 weeks ago. Are they dead or just dormant?

Yeah they are on their way out. If they are in the wrong position to get at least 8 hours light then i'd suggest moving them. Water and mulch they should come back. I have a hedge of gardenia's and one did look like that but have put it in a sunnier position and it is coming back fine. I good test to see if it still has life in it, is to use your thumb nail and scratch the trunk a bit. If you see green under the bark our outter layer than its still has a chance. You'll know if its dead when you scratch it.

What is the best way to grow a Gardenia Bush? I have planted 3 in my garden and they have all died.?

Gardenia requirements are very exact, and to insure your plants continued bloom, these needs must be met.

Full sun, with some shading in the summer (in the hottest areas)

An acid soil with a pH between 5 and 6

Keep the soil moist, but never soggy

Humidity, or daily misting

Heavy feeding

**Cool night temperatures**

Gardenias should be planted in well conditioned soil containing peat moss and compost. Cultivating around the plants may damage their shallow roots, so the plant should be mulched with 2 to 3 inches of wood chips, sawdust or ground bark to keep the soil moist, cool and weed free. Feed the plants every three weeks during the growing season with a rhododendron-azalea food, or acidifying fertilizer. (Miracid)

Proper temperatures are necessary for a gardenia to bloom. This is the most critical aspect. Flower buds will fail to form if day temperatures are higher than 70degrees or night temperatures are over 65 degrees or less than 60 degrees. The ideal temperature ranges would be 65 to 70 degrees during the day and 60 to 62 degrees at night.

Gardenias can be pruned as far back as you like but you should keep a few important details in mind. First, cut plants back when they are dormant ( depending upon where you live). This will allow the stems to "heal their wounds" when the plants aren't actively growing. This way you can still enjoy flowers the next year. When pruning, don't cut all the leaves off. Some leaves need to be left so the plant can still produce food for the root system. The following spring, use an acidic fertilizer with chealeted iron and high nitrogen so the plant can produce healthy leaves and buds. If you only want your plant to become bushier, simply pinch out the tips while the plant is dormant. Pinching will usually promote a heavier bloom the following year.

If you are growing your Gardenia as a potted plant indoors, keep it out of direct, hot sun, and allow it to only get bright light.

If you have what appears to be 'black mold', it is more than likely an algae growth, which is a cosmetic problem for your plant rather than a health problem. This could be caused by insufficient air circulation, or possibly lack of sun. Unfortunately, the only way to remove this growth is by hand washing each leaf.

Where do you live? I stick the pruned branches in the mud and they grow. I have them everywhere.

They grow well as far North as Virginia and as far South as Georgia.

They will frow in drought areas, but tthey like some water. They're okay with creek banks. They require little food, and like at least some sun, but do not like full sun in the South.
Reply:Hello,

The very last one should be really helpful, as the gardenweb people have many forums for answers in many catagories.
